President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the
BRONZE STAR MEDAL
MICHAEL A. HARRIS
RADIOMAN SECOND CLASS
UNITED STATES NAVY
for service set forth in the following
For heroic achievement on June 15, 1969 in connection with operations against the enemy while attached to River Assault Division 152. When preparing to load infantry troops the ramp cable on Petty Officer HARRIS' boat failed. Suddenly the enemy launched a vicious attack with rockets and automatic weapons fire. Realizing that his crew and boat were in grave danger Petty Officer HARRIS, disregarding his own safety and exposing himself to the enemy, began rigging the disabled ramp with a chain hoist. Another sailor came to assist and Petty Officer HARRIS ordered him to lay down a cordon of fire. He then began raising the ramp manually while ignoring the fierce enemy fire. Only after the ramp was in the upright position was his boat able to back off the riverbank. Petty Officer HARRIS returned to his machine gun to help suppress the enemy ambush. After all was stable he assisted the wounded sailors who were medically evacuated to safety. Petty Officer HARRIS' exceptional courage and keen judgment in the face of great peril were instrumental in sparing his fellow crewmembers injury or death and helped his assault craft recover to it's original fighting condition. Petty Officer Harris' heroic actions are an honor to his unit and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
For the President,
Donald C. Winter
Secretary of the Navy
